It’s Volunteering Time!

Time to do the repair rounds this weekend.

Heading out to the Soldier’s Home to do some network upgrades and make sure all the old guys are all set with email addresses. They’re a great bunch of old guys that really depend on their VERY old PC’s, and I mean VERY old. I’m sure I’ll run into the typical problems of spyware and such but I’m hoping to re-wire some of the ethernet drops so I’ll take the “Nuclear Briefcase.”

These men are largely forgotten. Most in there were single throughout life and are used to the institutionalization the Military provided. You would think that would make them harsh and cold, but I find the contrary to be true. They always greet me with a smile and a handshake, not because I’m coming to fix their computers but because I’m there to talk and listen and visit. I tell you, it brings me closer to my grandfather listening to some of these men tell their war stories.

I often wonder where I’ll end up when I’m that old.
